Chapter 6

Malcolm was committed to getting a better deal for those less well off in society. On his return to the UK, he taught in some of the toughest schools in the North East, including what was then known as Elgin school, near the Old Fold, in Gateshead. It wasn't easy, but he wanted to do his bit to give less fortunate kids a better start in life. Despite the terrible deprivation in the area in the 1970s and 1980s, he was immensely proud to see one of his pupils get accepted to Cambridge University -- something that was unheard of at the school at the time.
